Time Person Of The Year 2024 Donald Trump

Trump to Receive Time’s ‘Person of the Year’ Honor for Second Time

Donald Trump will be named Time magazine‘s “Person of the Year” for 2024 on Thursday, marking his second time receiving the distinction that recognizes individuals who have significantly influenced global affairs, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The former president, who previously received the honor in 2016 following his first presidential victory, will commemorate the announcement by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The selection follows an extensive interview Trump conducted with the magazine last month.

The recognition comes amid Trump’s notable political resurgence and follows a complex history between the former president and the magazine’s annual distinction. Despite Trump’s previous public statement suggesting Time would never select him, the magazine first named him Person of the Year in 2016 after his unexpected presidential victory.

Trump’s relationship with the honor has been particularly notable over the years. The Washington Post reported that a 2009 Time cover featuring Trump as Person of the Year was displayed in several of his golf clubs, though no such issue existed. He has frequently commented on the magazine’s annual selections, criticizing choices such as Angela Merkel in 2015 and Taylor Swift in 2023.

The selection places Trump in historic company. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt, every U.S. president except Gerald Ford has received the designation at least once. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were jointly honored following their 2020 victory.

The ceremony is expected to draw family members including Ivanka Trump, marking a rare public appearance for the former senior presidential adviser.

Time magazine representatives declined to comment on the selection.

The annual Person of the Year designation, while operating with reduced circulation in recent years, continues to serve as a significant cultural milestone, recognizing figures ranging from world leaders and activists to entrepreneurs and, occasionally, controversial authoritarian figures.
