Netflix dropped an unexpected Christmas surprise with the first teaser for “Happy Gilmore 2,” marking Adam Sandler’s return to his iconic role after a 29-year hiatus. The announcement coincided with Netflix’s historic first live broadcast of NFL games.
The 2025 release will reunite key players from the original cast, including Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit and Christopher McDonald reprising his role as the antagonist Shooter McGavin. The sequel has also assembled an eclectic mix of new talent, featuring:
- Bad Bunny
- Margaret Qualley
- Nick Swardson
- NFL star Travis Kelce
- Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi)
- “Uncut Gems” co-director Benny Safdie
Behind the camera, “Murder Mystery” director Kyle Newacheck takes the helm, with original screenwriter Tim Herlihy returning to pen the script. The first film’s director, Dennis Dugan, transitions to an executive producer role, alongside producers Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds.
The original 1996 film followed Sandler’s character, a failed hockey player with anger issues, who discovers an unusual talent for golf while trying to save his grandmother’s house from tax collectors. The comedy became one of Sandler’s most enduring hits, memorable for its unique blend of sports comedy and outrageous scenes, including a notorious fistfight with game show host Bob Baker.
