Kevin Federline highlights a pivotal moment in his forthcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, when he claims to have witnessed pop icon Britney Spears in an intimate encounter with dancer Teresa Espinosa during their relationship.
USA Today published an excerpt in which Federline, former backup dancer and Spears’ ex-husband, recounts walking in on Spears and Espinosa together early in his relationship with Spears—a moment he describes as unforgettable for its deep impact on him.
The Alleged Amsterdam Incident
Federline said the couple, who first met in 2004 while Spears was on tour and began dating shortly before their engagement, had been out enjoying Amsterdam’s famous nightlife when the situation unfolded. “We stayed out late, hitting one of the city’s nightclubs until at least one or two in the morning. It felt like just another fun time on tour — a night you laugh about later,” he recalled.
According to Federline, Spears told him she’d be “right back” after they returned to their hotel. When she didn’t return, he went looking for her. “As I passed a room, I glanced inside—and froze,” he wrote. “There she was. Teresa [sic] sat on the edge of the bed. Britney stood between her legs, hands on her face, and they were going at it.”
He added, “It hits you so fast, your brain can’t process it. You just stand there, stunned.” Federline claimed he packed his bags immediately, writing, “This wasn’t what I signed up for. I just wanted out.”
A Tumultuous Relationship
Spears and Federline’s romance was one of the most publicized relationships of the early 2000s. The pair announced their engagement just three months after meeting and married in September 2004. Their union produced two sons — Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, 19. Spears filed for divorce in 2006, citing irreconcilable differences.
The split was followed by a years-long custody battle and mounting tension. Spears’ personal struggles played out under the scrutiny of a conservatorship that lasted more than a decade. In his memoir, Federline revisits those years from his perspective. He mixes intimate memories with concern over Spears’ well-being and mental health.
Spears Responds Through Her Representative
As excerpts from Federline’s book make headlines, Spears’ camp has issued a sharp response. “With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again, he and others are profiting off her. Sadly, it comes after child support has ended with Kevin,” a representative for Spears, 43, told People. “All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being. She detailed her journey in her memoir [The Woman in Me].”
In her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears reflected on her turbulent marriage and the media’s obsession with her personal life. She accused Federline of exploiting their relationship. She wrote that he “took my world away from me” during their custody battle and that she often felt “betrayed by those closest to me.”
Public Reaction and Ongoing Feud
Federline’s memoir has reignited focus on his core allegation about the Amsterdam incident, intensifying public debate over the former couple’s chaotic past and the motives behind Federline’s revelations.
The renewed tension underscores a long-standing pattern in Spears’ post-conservatorship era. Her attempts to reclaim her narrative are frequently met with renewed scrutiny.
Federline’s memoir, You Thought You Knew, will be released on Oct. 21. Spears has not directly addressed the Amsterdam claim. Her representative’s comments suggest she remains focused on her family and healing, rather than revisiting past controversies.
