Former Texas Star Jordan Shipley Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Severe Ranch Accident

Former Texas Longhorns standout and NFL wide receiver Jordan Shipley remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after suffering severe burn injuries during an accident on his ranch in Central Texas earlier this week, his family said Tuesday.

According to a statement released through the University of Texas athletic department, Shipley was injured while operating machinery on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet, which caught fire and caused his severe burns before he escaped.

“Jordan was operating a machine on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet when it caught fire,” the family said in the statement. “He managed to get out, but not before sustaining serious injuries.”

After the incident, Shipley reached one of the ranch workers, who drove him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, medical personnel later arranged for him to be airlifted to a hospital in Austin, where he remained hospitalized Tuesday night.

“He was driven to a local hospital by one of the workers and was then care-flighted to Austin,” the statement said.

The family did not share further medical details but said Shipley is receiving specialized care. Burn injuries may require intensive treatment and monitoring for complications. The family requested privacy during his recovery.

The Texas football community was shocked by the news. Shipley is remembered as one of the program’s most reliable players from 2006 to 2009, pivotal on offense and special teams.

A two-time All-American, Shipley set school records for single-season receiving yards and receptions in 2009 and remains the program’s all-time leader in receptions and is second in career receiving yards.

Shipley contributed as a returner, with 30 punt returns for 375 yards and three touchdowns, and 19 kickoff returns for 468 yards and another touchdown, showcasing versatility.

Shipley’s Texas success led to the NFL. Drafted in the third round by the Bengals in 2010, he tallied 52 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie.

He went on to play two more seasons in the NFL, splitting time with the Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Persistent injuries eventually shortened his professional career, and Shipley retired from football in 2014.

Since retiring, Shipley has focused on ranching and business in Texas, maintaining a low profile. His recent injury brought support from former teammates, coaches, and fans, all citing his resilience and work ethic.

As Shipley continues to receive treatment in Austin, his family emphasized that his condition, while serious, remains stable. They expressed gratitude for the first responders, medical teams, and well-wishers who have offered prayers and encouragement.

The focus remains on Shipley’s recovery as the Texas football community supports him, hopeful that his past determination will help him in his current battle.
