WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration upgraded its alert level Monday for Costco’s organic egg recall to Class I, its most serious classification, indicating potential life-threatening health risks from salmonella contamination.
The recall affects 10,800 units of Kirkland Signature 24-count organic eggs distributed to 25 Costco locations across five southeastern states beginning November 22. Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall after discovering eggs not intended for market were accidentally packaged and shipped.
Affected cartons carry Julian code 327 with a January 5, 2025, use-by date, and were sold in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. No illnesses have been reported.
The Class I designation indicates “reasonable probability” of serious health consequences or death from exposure to the product. Salmonella, found in animal intestines, can cause severe food poisoning through contaminated animal products.
This recall joins several recent high-profile food safety alerts. Frito-Lay recalled certain Lay’s Classic Potato Chips for undeclared milk allergens, while Carolina Prime Pet recalled dog treats in 19 states for potential salmonella. September saw recalls of Lactaid Milk and Reser’s macaroni and cheese products.
Consumers should return affected eggs to Costco for a refund or dispose of them immediately.
“The recall was initiated after officials determined eggs not meant for delivery to markets had accidentally been packaged and distributed,” the FDA stated, emphasizing the preventive nature of the action.
