SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fire crews responded Wednesday morning to an active brush fire in Rancho Bernardo, prompting evacuations and road closures as flames threatened nearby structures.
Dubbed the “Bernardo Fire,” the blaze was first reported at 8:55 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD). Firefighters arrived on the scene near Bernardo Center Drive and Camino Del Norte shortly after 9 a.m. As of 10:20 a.m., the fire had burned 5 to 7 acres with a moderate rate of spread.
Authorities issued evacuation orders for areas bordered by Dove Canyon Road to the west, Camino Del Norte to the north, I-15 to the east, and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. A temporary evacuation center has been set up at 12080 Carmel Mountain Road in the parking lot of an At Home store.
The San Diego Police Department closed several roads, including sections of I-15 and Camino Del Norte, to aid in firefighting efforts. SDFD updated its estimate of the fire’s potential spread to 20 acres, down from earlier concerns of 100 acres.
One person has been hospitalized with burn injuries, officials said. Firefighters are working to control the blaze as a structure threat remains imminent.
Residents in areas under evacuation warnings, stretching toward Black Mountain Open Space Park and Camino Del Sur, are advised to stay alert for updates.
This is a developing story.
