DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware wildlife officials reported Thursday that snow geese found at Prime Hook Beach tested presumptively positive for highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, marking the first potential case in Delmarva’s wild birds since May 2022.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) discovered over 40 sick or dead birds since December 27. Samples have been sent to the University of Delaware Poultry Health System for confirmation.
The case emerges amid rising national bird flu infections. Officials urge waterfowl hunters and residents to exercise caution when encountering sick or dead birds.
Delaware poultry farmers must follow strict biosecurity protocols to protect flocks. “Backyard flock owners should immediately report any symptoms to the Delaware Poultry Health Hotline,” said State Veterinarian Jane Smith.
The outbreak particularly concerns Delaware’s substantial poultry industry. Maryland has issued similar advisories to farmers as the virus spreads regionally.
DNREC continues monitoring the situation and advises residents to avoid handling affected birds.
