LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed key details about the show’s Season 2 finale and upcoming final season in an exclusive interview with Variety.
The Netflix series’ second season concluded with The Front Man, secretly posing as Player 001, killing protagonist Gi-hun’s best friend Jung-bae. The shocking death came after Gi-hun led a player uprising against the game’s organizers.
“All of his failures lead to this heavy crisis of having to lose his very best friend,” Hwang explained. “I thought that was an adequate moment to put a stop and give him closure along that long story arc.”
Hwang indicated Season 3 will likely premiere in summer or fall 2025, focusing on Gi-hun at a “critical crossroads” following his devastating loss. A mid-credits scene featuring new versions of the show’s iconic “Red Light, Green Light” dolls hints at significant changes to the game’s format.
“After Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon,” Hwang said. “Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
The creator particularly praised Season 2’s pentathlon sequence, which showcased five traditional Korean children’s games in a single round. He promised the series will continue to expand with “more intense story, and definitely more entertaining” content through its conclusion.
Season 2’s finale marks a dramatic shift from the show’s original format, with players actively rebelling against the game’s infrastructure. The mid-credits scene suggests further evolution of the deadly competition in its final season.
