NEW YORK (AP) — Neil Cavuto, one of Fox News Channel’s longest-serving anchors, is leaving the network after 28 years, the company confirmed Thursday.
Cavuto, 66, will deliver his final farewell to viewers during Thursday afternoon’s broadcast of “Your World,” marking the end of an era at the conservative news network. Sources familiar with the matter said Cavuto declined to sign a new contract that would have included a reduced salary.
“Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism, and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media,” the network said in a statement. “His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry.”
Along with primetime host Sean Hannity, Cavuto was among the few remaining original personalities who had been with Fox News since its 1996 launch. Throughout his tenure, he developed a reputation for maintaining an independent editorial stance, occasionally challenging both Republican and Democratic positions.
His departure comes amid broader changes in the television news industry, as networks grapple with declining advertising revenues and the impact of cord-cutting. While Fox News maintains strong ratings and a robust digital presence, industry sources say the network isn’t immune to the financial pressures affecting broadcast media.
A network source, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters, emphasized that Cavuto’s occasional criticism of Donald Trump played no role in his exit. The source noted that contract negotiations began before the recent election and that Cavuto was offered what was described as a generous deal, albeit with reduced compensation.
Cavuto’s willingness to fact-check Trump’s statements had made him a frequent target of the former president’s criticism. Despite Trump’s social media attacks and calls for his dismissal, Cavuto maintained his editorial approach as the network’s coverage increasingly aligned with Trump’s base.
During his time at Fox News, Cavuto served as senior vice president and managing editor of business news across both Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. He anchored three daily programs: “Your World with Neil Cavuto” and “Cavuto Live” on Fox News, and “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Fox Business Network.
The veteran anchor’s departure represents another shift in the cable news landscape, where networks are increasingly reassessing talent costs against changing viewer habits and advertising models.
Fox News has not yet announced who will replace Cavuto in his various roles at the network.
